MAY BIRTHSTONE – EMERALD
Emeralds have been held in high esteem since ancient times. Some of the most famous emeralds are found in museums and collections. The name emerald comes from Old French ‘Esmeralde’ meaning green gemstone. Written in the Vedas, the holy scriptures of the Indians is that the Emeralds promise good luck and enhance wellbeing. Emerald also represents the colour of beauty and of constant love. In Ancient Rome, green was the colour of Venus, the goddess of beauty and love. Even if many of the best emeralds are undisputedly of Colombian origin, the ‘birthplace’ of a stone is nver an absolute guarantee of its immaculate quality. Fine emeralds are also found in other countries such as Zambia, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Pakistan, India & Afghanistan.
